Label/Format: CBS, deep orange matt format with very gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with only a very small few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A very small ‘RS’ stamp on side one, not sure what that is, but its neat, crisp and small as-seen.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: The third S&G album and their first masterpiece. Brilliantly recorded with beautiful songs, this will never age. This a lovely UK mono copy, and not seen as often. The first issues also included a laminated front cover and the back with flipbacks. The copy appears very modestly played and offers impressive clean sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate, this covers all folds and ends on the back on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Dawson Rossiter Limited. Includes the vintage orange CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Very impressive indeed for a front this considerable age. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and only a trace of rim impression/faint dulling near the top and bottom. Most of any creasing fine and faint, mostly confined to the edges that few will avoid. The famous graphic dark and unblemished, this with the mono catalogue number.

Cover Back: This original flipbacked Dawson Rossiter made cover is rarer and seen far less often than subsequent printings. There is modestly light darkening of the white card to politely remind of its genuine age, nearer moderate near the very edges. However no rubbing or creasing with little else to fault. The three flipbacks are all neat, solid and undamaged with clean ends and practically devoid of burring or thickening. Be assured, most copies of this album have flat backs with no external flipbacks, Dawson Rossiter were a much smaller printer than the likes of the major ones likes Garrod & Lofthouse, Ernest J. Day and MacNeill and others.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both mainly straight, smooth and barely worn at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Still mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this also nicely centred as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, any tip creasing similar. Very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this rarer original 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive, little-worn item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined early CBS promotional inner that has aged little at all. Still clean, fresh with deep colour and minimal creasing. All edges now secure after a tiny neat bottom edge split was repaired by myself to stop it widening, it hardly even registers. These are seldom seen much better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, some wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this for me, one of the greatest of the decade. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
