Description
The following auction is for a rare USA Garage/Psych 45 called "What The World Needs Now" / "You Don't Get Young Anymore" by Sincerely, San Jose (aka Fritz, containing Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) (Karma 301, ca 1968)
As I didn't know anything about this 45 I did some research about the group and the only thing I could really find out was that a copy of this seems to have only turned up on Ebay one time before (according to popsike.com) this was in 2004 under the title "Fritz 45 Lindsey Buckingham Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac" the seller it appears has done all the research for me and the following is what he had dug up!....By the way his record was graded VG+ and the item made $880....
This is a heretofore unknown, previously undocumented 45 release by the Bay Area group Fritz, containing Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in their first commercially-released recordings though credited for some unknown reason to the name Sincerely, San Jose. It features two of three songs recorded in a 1968 demo session at a San Mateo, CA studio, and both feature lead vocals by Buckingham (with Stevie clearly audible in the harmonies, especially on the B-side where she stands out a bit more in the vocal blend). The A-side is a nice rock cover of the Burt Bacharach standard (though check out the "Bacharock" spelling on the label!), while the B-side is a very cool late 60's garage pop track written by Fritz keyboardist Javier Pacheco and with alternating fast and slow sections (not to mention some fine guitar, bass, and keyboard playing). Lindsey is probably playing bass on here, though some of the guitar work on the slow sections sounds like his work as well). Javier Pacheco is featured in a Q&A Session at http://www.fleetwoodmac.net/penguin/qa/javierpacheco_qa1.htm where he talks a bit about the session that produced these tracks (as well as a third featuring a Stevie Nicks lead, the reference to the songs is in Section Three of the Q&A). Pacheco is unaware of any Fritz recordings having been released, but the proof to the contrary is right here. How did the small Bay Area label get the songs, and why were they issued under this name? Maybe listed producer Phil Vickery could provide some insight. Whatever the reason, the name has allowed this single to slip under the radar for some 35 years without being discovered. It was only after I tried to put a date to the record by researching it on the internet that I was able to establish the connection with Fritz, Buckingham, Nicks, and Fleetwood Mac. Listening to it, it's very obvious that this is indeed Lindsey and Stevie. While Lindsey sounds a bit younger (as he indeed was), all of the vocal mannerisms that would characterize his singing in later years is already present. Listen especial to the word "mountain" in the verse of "What The World Needs Now"; it's unmistakable. And Stevie in the top harmony of the chorus of "You Don't Get Young Anymore" also sounds exactly as she would in later years.
