I wish I could say I had a picture sleeve for this MONSTER 1966 garage punk scorcher – which would make it only the sixth known example in existence, and one of the Top 120 Most Legendary Collectible US 60’s Garage 45s according to finerecordingstudio.com. But even without the sleeve, this single by Oklahoma’s the Skeptics is still one of the all-time classic garage psych beasts. And if there are slightly more than five known examples without the picture sleeve, you wouldn’t know it. They still show up about as often as a winning lottery ticket on the sidewalk outside your front door.
You’ll find “Apple Candy” on Monsters of the Midwest Volume 2, and it’s the epitome of snotty teen garage psych attitude. Ripping off the riff from “I’m A Man” and then p&**ing all over it, the machine gun drums battle some scathing guitar in a break for the ages. Not at all for the faint of heart, this m ust’ve burst some beatpop-weaned sock hop eardrums back in 1966. And if this is how they think apple candy sounds, then someone’s on a serious sugar high.
Flipside “Ride Child” got an invite to Psychedelic Unknowns Volume 4, which implies it’s more psychedelic than the manic garage freakout A-side, which it is. It’s a moodier mind-melter, with some good Byrds-inspired guitar, but still raw n’ crude like a good garage single should be. Some groovy cymbal washes give it a slightly trippier edge, which is probably how it ended up on Psychedelic Unknowns versus any of the more garage-oriented comps. It might’ve actually blown my mind too, if t he other side hadn’t already caved in my skull. Be careful which side you play first.
Original 1967 pressing on the Kampus label. Last one I saw on Ebay sold for $419, and that was only 4 months ago. That one was in VG+++ shape (whatever that means), this one's got some very light superficial marks on both sides of the vinyl and plays overall VG+. Listen to the soundclip for a more accurate representation without all those plus signs.
