Here's a rare gem from the PREMIERE Austin punk-new wave power trio, THE SKUNKS -- personnel: JESSE SUBLETT on bass & lead vocals, JON DEE GRAHAM on guitar and BILLY BLACKMON on drums. THE SKUNKS were the first Austin punk band, formed in 1977 and they were the band that started the punk-new wave scene in Austin, jump starting that city as the Live Music Capital of the World with their debut gig in February 1978. They recorded an LP for Rude Records within 2 months of that first gig, but that was not released until 1981 and it is a strange and inferior record to this one. This record was recorded in 1979 in a garage on a 2 track reel to reel machine. 1,000 copies of this first iconic single were pressed, and another pressing followed but the sleeve was different. This record garnered a substantial amount of airplay in Austin and sold very quickly. It is a very desirable collectible despite its crude sound and cheap production. But the ENERGY!!!! The band fairly explodes here and you get a taste, just a tiny taste of what the band was like live -- remembered as one of the loudest bands in Texas music history and certainly one of the most energetic and prolific. Jon Dee Graham is today one of Austin's most loved singer/songwriter/guitarists and his live sets, whether acoustic or electric, are among the must-see things in the capital city. Jesse Sublett is an acclaimed writer, having published numerous crime& music novels and a memoir, not to mention his work for television, screenplays and, so far, one play. Sublett is also a solo performer and still a prolific songwriter. This copy of the single is in pretty good condition considering the age. The corners of the sleeve are bent but not creased. The vinyl has some scratches but I don't think it will affect its playability much, they don't look that bad. The lyric sheet is intact. The sleeve is SIGNED by all 3 band members.
