By 1996, Olympia trio Sleater-Kinney already sounded slightly impatient with the wider state of American indie rock. While much of the decade's guitar music drifted towards slacker detachment, Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein pushed in the opposite direction, sharpening everything into wiry riffs and emotionally combustible songwriting. Their second album still crackles with that sense of urgency. 'Call the Doctor', 'Hubcap' and 'Stay Where You Are' lurch forward on nervy guitars and Lora Macfarlane's restless drumming, while 'I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone' remains one of the great acts of punk romanticism: equal parts devotion, ambition and challenge thrown directly at the boys' club. Nearly thirty years on, these songs still sound thrillingly alive.
