This album is widely considered a masterpiece of 1960s music, so I won't re-iterate here how good musically this album is! For sale here we have a first pressing of this LP in glorious Mono. It is NOT in wonderful condition, particularly the notoriously fragile sleeve, however the strength of the Mono groove really cuts through and it plays superbly, being a joy to listen to. As a beginners copy of this album, or a collection filler, this may be just the ideal opportunity. Here goes...
THE VINYL: Everything sold on eBay is play tested! I'll start with what is ultimately this copy's high point - the vinyl. I would grade this as being in Excellent minus condition. It plays superbly with only very slight surface noice behind the quieter passages. There is one scratch across Side One, tracks 1 and 2 that cannot be felt, and sounds only very slightly. The rest of the vinyl is very clean, with only light whisps, hairlines and marks. A real pleasure to play.
NOTE: The vinyl is a slightly THICKER pressing than others I have seen over the years. My domestic 1st pressing of this album of this can be slightly bent when forced, whereas the one for sale here is a much chunkier, solid cut of vinyl. This contributes towards a great, deep sound.
THE LABELS: Graded VG. The labels are very clean with no blemishes. Both sides have some spindle wear, with side two being worse than side one. Otherwise, both labels are most presentable indeed. There is NO tax code stamped on the labels.
THE SLEEVE: The sleeve is famous for being one of the most complex designs and most fragile ever made, rarely turning up fully in tact. Sadly this is reflected in the copy here. Of the five joins between the five circular panels, only 3 remain joined, whereas two have separated. This results in the sleeve being in two parts. These are clean splits, and can be repaired with sellotape (as a previous owner has already carefully attempted, but failed to succeed), but this is upto the buyer to do if desired. The five panels themselves are in Very Good condition, maintaining rich colour and clear images with only minor creasing to parts of the panels, particularly closer to the joins. Were it not for those breaks, this is a most presentable sleeve.
The sleeve has both the 'Garrod and Lofthouse' inner panel printing credit and the 'UK PATENT APPLICATION NO. 21639/68' on the rear panel, denoting a first pressing sleeve. There is NO original thin plastic inner sleeve that originally came with this album.
IN CONCLUSION: As a Mono first pressing goes of this album, it really is not at all bad. If you are after a perfect copy, this is definitely not for you though! The vinyl really is the strongest point of this album, with the sleeve being adequate for a collection filler, or first time buyer, until that fully intact sleeve comes along.
