SMALL FACES: Tin Soldier/I Feel Much Better IMMEDIATE US ZS7 5003 with PIC SLEEVE. Stock copy on pink Immediate with "For Demonstration Use Only Not For Sale".
It was a criminal act. A song that defined the Small Faces was killed....assassinated without a fighting chance to hit the charts like it did in the UK and Europe. Clive Davis and his accountants at CBS were not happy campers. They had spent time and money promoting their previous single Itchycoo Park and it succeeded in reaching the American Top Twenty. Then the band didn't bother touring the States effectively not promoting their single. Now CBS had to play out royalties, a high royalty for a band the large distributor had never met...... Now was a new one.... Tin Soldier, a big hit in the UK with a powerful heavy rock sound. So Tin Soldier comes out. It gets radio play but without much support from CBS doesn't really go anywhere except the bottom of the Top 100. The band doesn't bother touring and Clive points his music gun and fires the bullet killing the record and pretty much everything else Immediate was trying to promote in America. As one of Immediate stars, Duncan Browne, would later sing much later "it's a criminal world".
Along with it's psych-pop/rock flip "I Feel Much Better" it was the perfect double sided single of the sixties. Too bad not many people heard it although time was kind to the four Small Faces and by the end of the 1980's they were starting to get the recognition they justly deserved.
Both sides played from start to finish - no skips, no jumps. A few light lines/scuffs - nothing deep. Two clean white labels. Some light surface noise/tics but certainly not overpowering.
