The Soft Machine S/T ABC/Probe CPLP4500
I can’t say enough positive things about this groundbreaking debut. The cornerstone of what would become the “Canterbury Sound”, the Softs featured the triple threat of Mike Ratledge, an organist who could draw more interesting sounds out of his basic B-3 than most synth players could find in a lifetime, Kevin Ayers, here a bassist but soon to become the Dean Martin of progressive rock, and Robert Wyatt, one of the three best British drummers of the era, and arguably the first British singer to sing in his native accent. And what a voice! Never has a rasp been more fluid or facile!
Together, they forged a sound that found common ground with experimental jazz and pop, managing the deft trick of producing atonal hooks, with an odd lyric style that had a down-to-earth Zen-like here-and-now quality that was funny, disarming and sometimes heart-breaking. No wonder Hendrix himself chose them as his touring opening act. An lp that is endlessly fascinating and gets my highest recommendation.
This is the original U.S. issue with the ‘spinning gears” gimmick cover. Gatefold cover has minor general and ring wear. Disc is a visual VG+ but plays a grade better to me.
