English punk rock duo Soft Play - longtime fans will know them best by the name Slaves - deliver their fourth full-length studio record Heavy Jelly. Unlike their prior outings, Heavy Jelly is described as Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent’s most “cartoonish” record yet, indulging a late-stage image of pristine bubblegum irony, one that works surprisingly, ominously well when paired with the rapacious punk-metal fangs bared in the sonic content. From the swung sonic cutlass that is ‘Isaac Is Typing’- which has highly interpretable lyrics, ones which would seem to get at the glossily facile demeanour of much contemporary culture - to the screeching ‘Worms On Tarmac’, whose impertinent up-down drive hears much punk-babble of "amputated generations” and exhortations against celebrity culture and smoking, this album's exegetic is most likely one of extreme satire.
