Description

Killer Latin funk from the mid 70s -- a totally rare little set, but a masterpiece all the way through! Sol is a combo headed up by keyboardist Joe Gallardo -- and they've got a groove that blends together some wonderful elements -- including jazz funk, straight Latin, and a bit of Chicano soul -- all wrapped up in a warm, west coast sort of vibe that's totally great! In a way, the album almost feels like some lost treasure from Fantasy Records' best funky years -- but it's also got a more unique feel overall, and a way of changing up the groove that keeps things fresh throughout. Lead vocals are by Ray Romero, who sings in English, and almost echoes Mark Murphy's style on Muse -- and other instrumentation includes guitar, flute, saxes, trumpet, and lots of Latin percussion. Titles include the cut "Maranatha", a very nice groover -- plus a version of Ray Barretto's "El Que Se Fue", Stevie Wonder's "Bird Of Beauty", and the original cuts "Sailing", "Patrice", "Someday", and "Squeeze".

Joe Gallardo and Sol on GCP 120.  This is the very rare original pressing from 1975.  The lp was sealed when I purchased it and i've included a picture showing this.  The jacket has some water damage and dirt to the front side mostly, however the record is fine with some very light streaking which does not affect play (I have spot checked both sides).  The record sounds crystal clear and is unplayed other than the spot checking.  The vinyl has a minor dish warp, as shown in the photo.  You can see on the table how the edges are raised just a bit.  Almost not worth mentioning and not affecting play of record.  I would grade the record as VG++ visually, and it's audio quality as new.  The jacket is quite beat up obviously, though it may be able to be cleaned up a bit, and the seams are still fine.

GRADING:

MINT:  Flawless - I rarely use this grade.

M- or NM:  Record may have one or two small, barely visible marks, inaudible and inconsequential.

VG++:  Record may have a few small marks that would not affect play.

VG+:  Record with more marks but minor, inaudible, and not affect play.

Anything below VG+ will be described in great detail.  Most of my listings are described in detail, and any questionable marks are play graded.
