Description

DUKE ELLINGTON was so accomplished, as prolific composer, arranger and bandleader, that we forget what a fine pianist he also was.  Recorded in Hollywood in December, 1936, Duke sat down for a rare turn as soloist, to play four of his most famous pieces: "MOOD INDIGO" - "SOLITUDE" and "SOPHISTICATED LADY" - "IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD."

This was release number two on Irving Mills' short-lived "vanity" label, MASTER, which was quite successful for a label that lasted only three months (April - July, '37)! The records are easy enough to find. What you NEVER see is an original "Master" sleeve, made of delicate, cheap paper, such as the one included with this record.  It's in pretty nice shape, to boot.

This original 1937 Master 102 is in solid E- condition.  The original Master sleeve has a little tear at the bottom - otherwise, it's in solid condition too.

*****

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
