Very scarce original pressing on Geffen for GOO, Sonic Youth's first major-label full-length. Like most great albums from the early 1990's, this was produced in very limited quantities as CD was the preferred medium at that time. Difficult to find a copy in reasonably nice condition -- this one looks practically new.
A modern classic in every sense, and years ahead of its time when recorded, this is one of SY's best albums by any measure and sounds terrific today, especially in analog. Giant Raymond Pettibon cover art, contributions from J Mascis, Don Fleming, and Chuck D... Mastered by Howie Weinberg and Masterdisk (DMM).
Cover condition, overall grade: EX (+)
Probably closer to NM, only flaws are a slight bit of ring rubbing to front cover (quite difficult to see), and a small scratch to the spine. Corners are unbent. No creases, no folds, no seam splits.
Printed inner sleeve on heavy stock, in full color, is flawless Near Mint.
Vinyl condition, overall grade: EX (+)
Great pressing, glossy black vinyl, in lovely shape. A few very faint sleeve scuffs are evident in good light and are generally not audible as far as I can tell (see playtest notes below.) Labels clean with just a light fingerprint mark, no spindle marks; a really clean and barely-played example.
Playtested for this auction: Yes.
Playtests extremely well on audiophile equipment - this one needs to be cranked up, so a little bit of unobtrusive vinyl noise can be heard during quieter passages and between tracks - but more than makes up for this in detail and dynamics. Some light popping near the end of side two, track two, was all I noticed during critical listening. Really must be heard in its original vinyl pressing to be believed -- "Tunic (Song For Karen)" has incredible punch and soundstage, and "Disappearer" offers so much more depth of field, richness, and tension... compared with digital (and remastered) editions.
Really hard to part with this one - definitely a keeper! NO RESERVE.
