Sonny Rollins, tenor sax; Red Garland, piano; “Philly” Joe Jones, drums; *John Coltrane, tenor sax; Paul Chambers, Bass *Tenor Madness, Note: On Tenor Madness, Coltrane takes the first solo and also leads off on the chases. Trane wasn't originally supposed to be on this recording. The musicians told Sonny that he was outside sitting in the car. Sonny got him, taught him the melody and then this happened. Classic! WALTER THEODORE ROLLINS was born on September 7, 1930 in New York City. He grew up in Harlem not far from the Savoy Ballroom, the Apollo Theater, and the doorstep of his idol, Coleman Hawkins. After early discovery of Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong, he started out on alto saxophone, inspired by Louis Jordan. At the age of sixteen, he switched to tenor, trying to emulate Hawkins. He also fell under the spell of the musical revolution that surrounded him, bebop. Everyone should bow their heads in awe and appreciation that we have for these great geniuses of American music. For their like will never come again.
