Incredible archive-quality copy of a sought-after recording by the great saxophonist Sonny Rollins, backed by a roster of West Coast all-star jazz greats from the Contemporary label. Iconic front cover portrait by jazz photographer William Claxton and liner notes by label owner Lester Koenig. Original VERY FIRST pressing in TRUE STEREO from 1959 in superb condition with original loose baggy. The finest copy of this LP we have ever seen!

Excellent with only minor wear and crinkles. Very rare to find the original loose baggy still included (shrink wrap was not yet in use at the time.) This bag with original $5.98 price sticker has kept the cover in absolutely new condition.

REVIEWS:
The last of the classic Sonny Rollins albums prior to his unexpected three-year retirement features the great tenor with pianist Hampton Hawes, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Leroy Vinegar and drummer Shelly Manne (all bandleaders for Contemporary Records during this era) on an unusual but inspired list of standards. Rollins creates explorative and often witty improvisations on such songs as "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody," "You," "In the Chapel in the Moonlight," and roaring versions of "I've Found a New Baby" and "The Song Is You." Sonny Rollins's career "out West" in California was, at the time this session was recorded, confined mainly to playing live. He'd done one outstanding record with a California-based band (Out West) but found time to cut some tunes with Hampton Hawes, Leroy Vinnegar, Barney Kessel, and Shelly Manne. As Contemporary Records-founder Lester Koenig remarks in the liner notes, Rollins characteristically unpacked a massive sheaf of music from which to pull tunes for the session. Like Out West, the tunes are at least idiosyncratic. When's the last time a postbop pioneer played anything like "Rock-a-Bye Baby with a Dixie Melody"? And the guitar-bass-sax trio on "I've Found a New Baby" slides off pristinely with its walking bass line, sharp strums, and Rollins's array of tongue effects and wafting tone that comes off its floating plateau to pounce on the melody repeatedly. Rollins sounds enthralled to be in this company, playing big-bodied lines and fluid loops. This is exceptional Rollins, plain and simple. - Andrew Bartlett
