Sonny Sharrock, Steve Marcus, Miroslav Vitous & Daniel Humair ?– Green Line LP [ORIGINAL JAPAN PROMO] (Victor World Group SMJX 10109) Gatefold cover
A RARE and truly wonderful 1970 LP lead by saxophonist Steve Marcus and legendary guitarist Sonny Sharrock full of funky jazz and free jazz excursions and a some funky breaks. This is the very first edition, on Victor this seems to have appeared only as a promo album with the eventual commercial release (also wicked rare) appearing on Japan's Victor subsidiary label Nivco. The LP is in a gatefold sleeve with an insert page in Japanese (permanantly attached to the sleeve by design)LP is MINT-/Cover is VG+ (light wear, there is a 2 inch seam split on the top at record insert of the back of the gatefold cover).
Sharrock is amazing on here, things start fairly conventionally, but soon Sharrock playing is both complex and wild, seething with skronk and vitriol. The following year Sharrock would bring this level of sonic chaos to Miles Davis for the sessions for the "Jack Johnson" album and I suspect he even scared Miles since only a few fragments ended up the final LP (there is a whole disc with Sharrock on the Complete Jack Johnson Sessions boxed set where Sharrock attacks an echoplex with beautiful and blistering results on the parts Miles titled "Willie Nelson").
Here Miroslav Vitous take Sharrock on with a bass and bow and delivers on par.
A Japanese American friend has explained to me that the Japanese text in the rectagonal to the left of the center hole on the label indicates this is an advance promotional copy of the LP. There is no record of this seeing proper release on Victor, the eventual Japanese release was on Nivico, though it appears from the pictures I've seen, the Nivco edition has a Nivco sticker over the Victor logo on the cover.
