Soul Vibration – Herman Chin Loy’s Funky Jamaican Trip celebrates the grooved-out soul of famed Jamaican producer, Herman Chin Loy. This beautiful hand silkscreened box set, each one hand numbered and uniquely printed, compiles five 7” records that best illustrate Chin Loy’s visionary aesthetic: a blend of Jamaican vibes and creativity with the influences of American funk and soul .

The first disc (H2O’s 1973 recording “Medusa) is a scorching, Temptations-esque funk breakdown complete with wah wah guitar and pulsing organ and horn riffs ( https://youtu.be/JiSApRW_JgA ).  The next (H2O’s 1971 recording “Arise Part 1”) is a rich, soulful horns cut of Alton Ellis’ “Arise Blackman.” (   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHE1X_eWgg4 / https://youtu.be/bF8Okd5OUFc

). Also dating from 1971 is James Eastwood’s “Darkest Night”,  a dark, driving version of the Soul Vendor’s “Darker Shade of Black” led by Eastwood’s wild, fuzzed-out guitar and is flipped by Augustus Pablo’s melodica next cut on the rhythm ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwU_x5eLZnc / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-Og0kMNvpE ).  1971’s ‘Soul Vibration’ by The Teacher, helmed by Chin Loy himself, begins with the State of the Union declaration: “This is the Soul Vibration That Rocks The Nation!” The tune then continues with Chin Loy delivering a hallucinatory DJ explosion over Augustus Pablo’s indelible “East of The River Nile.” ( https://youtu.be/anuA_sEmCU8 )  The final disc which dates from 1973 (Sounds Unlimited’s “Middle East Skank”) is grounded by the familiar “Drum Song” bass line, allowing Chin Loy and his musicians the freedom to explore the outer limits of horn-driven Jamaican soul ( https://youtu.be/nBJ00_eZSKQ / https://youtu.be/QqrLV4EA1as ).

Up until this release, these five records have been near impossible to find. Many of them were only released in minute amounts as “pre-release” copies. Accordingly, they have been some of the most sought-after Jamaican records by soul, funk and reggae collectors.  Beat diggers around the world will celebrate this release whether they have been fruitlessly searching for these cuts or hearing them for the first time. 

Pressure sounds have done the music justice by presenting the five 45s in the Rolls Royce of record boxes. Each hand-assembled box is a unique piece of art. The boxes have been hand silk-screened with great detail and a variety of colour-ways that accentuate the lush, psychedelic artwork of Okinawan artist, Massa Aquaflow. No two boxes of this limited edition are the same and will definitely add to the enjoyment of the music within.

In addition to the five records, the set includes a silkscreened poster with extensive sleeve notes and an interview with Herman Chin Loy by Diggory Kenrick; and a printed hand towel, of the type popular in both Japan and Jamaica as a functional fashion accessory (often tucked into the backpocket or waistband) perfect for wiping off the sweat caused by listening to these hot and sticky tracks.
