Description
Up for sale is a really cool find that needs a good home. I pulled this from a stack of psych records and I knew right away it was something special.
"Soup was a highly-regarded psych-blues-rock trio out of Appleton, Wisconsin, as the ’60s turned to the ’70s. It was led by Doug Yankus, a tremendous guitarist who wrote many original songs. Yankus started putting together bands when he was in high school in Appleton in the early ’60s. His first significant group was Private Property of Digil, a psych-blues-rock quartet that came together in 1965. PPOD was big regionally but only that. In 1968, it broke up.Then came Soup. It had Yankus on guitar, PPOD drummer David Faas on bass and a new drummer, Rob Griffith. Soup was sensational. Yet despite their growing popularity, Soup had nothing to offer fans except their memorable live shows. So they put together an LP that had a live side and some underproduced demos on the other side. They mimeographed an information sheet, stuck it inside, put it all in a plain brown wrapper and sold it at shows, head shops and a few record stores."
What's makes this particular copy special is that it is signed by all 3 members of the band on the front with a quote AND the members of the band CROW on the back side. I've spoken to several people and did some internet research and both bands did indeed share a bill together. There is a name of Peggy L Potter on the cover who we guess was the original owner and who did the custom artwork on the cover and the center labels. Total DIY but I think it gives the cover a certain charm. Maybe she was somehow connected to the band?
COVER= G+ This has been drawn and colored on and the original mimeographed sheet is gone. There is tape on the bottom seem and an 8" split on the top as well as a very rough edge leading to the left spine. (see pics)...The main selling point is the band signatures on both front and back. Each member of SOUP signed this and gave a small quote underneath. Pretty cool!
VINYL=Live Side VG- Has some shine remaining but does have some scattered scuffs and hairlines. There will be some pops and crackle in spots but the music is loud and mostly carries above. I have played this live side several times with NO skips. This is a one track side for the song "I'm So Sorry" featuring the amazing guitar chops of guitarist Doug Yankus. The studio side grades at a G+ mainly due to 2 skips during the first track. A good cleaning may fix this. The rest of the side plays without any skips but there are sections with more crackle than others. Honestly, it's not a horrible listen by any means since some sections sound pretty darn good. If you're only interested in a perfect sounding record then I would find another copy. Although the music is what counts, I feel the over all value is in the signatures of both bands.
