Various – SPEAK LOW ORIG Tempo LP / TAP 17 (UK, 1958)
Happy to present this incredibly rare Tempo release, recorded between 1955 and 1957 and featuring some of the greatest names in British jazz including Tubby Hayes, Jimmy Deuchar, Dizzy Reece, Don Rendell, Ronnie Scott et al. This has survived its 53 years extremely well.
The fully laminated sleeve is a double-flipback design made in the UK by West Brothers. There’s only ONE handling crease plus a small crease to the bottom left corner. Light signs of handling but no tears, splits, writing, stickers or rubbing. General age toning mainly to the rear but strong unchipped spine, somewhat flattened. Overall, a very pleasing example which may prove very difficult to find better. Graded a true EX (Excellent) maybe higher to many eyes. The cover girl by the way is a young Jackie Collins!
The original white/purple Tempo labels are fine – no writing, scrapes, residue. There is moderate spindle evidence around the centre hole (see photos) but really a nice pair of these old labels!
The solid medium to heavy weight vinyl grades a visual EX (Excellent). Under close examination there are some very hard to see light scuff marks (not many) and a small mark between tracks 3 and 4 on Side 2 which causes a couple of pops. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and generally plays very well. I noted the following: 1 click and 2 pops to Side 1, 2 light ticks to Side 2/T1, several clicks to Side 2/T3 and a single pop later on on this side. I believe that because there is very little to visually fault this disc, with a pro clean most of these are reversible. It certainly looks fine and sounds great for the vast majority. There are NO jumps, sticks/repeats or loss of clarity.
Very rare in any condition, this has been well cared for and looked after. Now over half a century old!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
