Martin Cockerham (vocals/guitar) and Mark Francis originally formed Spirogyra as a duo in Bolton, Lancashire in the summer of 1967. When Martin went to Canterbury University in 1969 he expanded the band to include fellow students Barbara Gaskin (vocals), Steve Borrill (bass guitar), and Julian Cusack (violin). They were soon spotted by student union entertainments officer Max Hole, who offered to manage them and got them a recording contract with B&C Records. Their debut album, St. Radigunds, was named after the street that their student house was on. It established them as a cult act on the underground club circuit, and sold respectably. Its follow-up, 1972's Old Boot Wine, appeared on Peg Records and showcased a harder-edged sound than their predominantly acoustic debut. After the release of Old Boot Wine, the band was pared back to the duo of Cockerham and Gaskin, who were by now romantically involved. Their final album, Bells, Boots and Shambles, appeared on Polydor in April 1973 and sold very poorly.
Widely regarded today as one of the classics of British 'acid folk', it featured guest appearances from the band's former members, as well as contributions from Henry Lowther on trumpet. Copies of all three albums are rare and expensive today, with Bells, Boots and Shambles almost impossible to acquire.
Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention played drums on all three albums as a guest.
In March 1974 Spirogyra had their very last tour, with Martin Cockerham (vocals and guitar), Barbara Gaskin (vocals and electric piano), Rick Biddulph (bass and guitars) and Jon Gifford (woodwinds). The new, rather experimental material was very promising, but never made it on to a fourth studio album.
Barbara Gaskin later appeared with HATFIELD and THE NORTH and NATIONAL HEALTH.She then enjoyed a hit as a part of a duo with DAVE STEWART covering Lesley Gore's [ It's My Party ].Cockerham would become one of the great songwriters of the period.

More info / Review by Dave SlegerSpirogyra was an early-'70s progressive, psychedelic folk group fronted by vocalists Barbara Gaskin and Martin Cockerham. This was their third and final album and RAREST and it is distinguished by Gaskin's flitting vocals and Cockerham's madcap delivery. At times, their tendency to drift resembles the Incredible String Band with Gaskin being the equivalent of Robin Williamson. Spirogyra rocks with considerably more regularity than ISB but they're equally esoteric, nevertheless. Cockerham even does a convincing imitation of Hunky Dory-era David Bowie on "The Sergant Says," and his manic side is most evident in the middle passage of the three-part epic "In the Western World." This is a difficult album to classify and was as problematic to promote, given its conspicuous absence in the U.S. market.
This record seldom comes up for sale and hardly ever in this top condition. Dont miss your chance

LP condition GRADING system:
M (MINT) : Sealed, never opened or played, new in original package.
NM (NEAR MINT) : Near perfect copy, played only a few times. At worst it may have one or two insignificant flaws. This is the highest grade I give for a non-sealed (used) record.
EX (EXCELLENT) : Clean copy, slight surface marks/hairlines, cover has minor defaults.
VG++ (VERY GOOD++) : More surface marks, minor flaws, or cover wear, minor edge wear (cover). Nothing serious but is not graded EX because of few minor defaults.
VG+ (VERY GOOD +) : Played a lot, will show signs of handling, has marks, possibly few light scratches but no jumps or sticks. Cover wear (light ring wear, heavier corner or edge wear on cover).
VG (VERY GOOD) : Used record, played a lot, has marks, few scratches, some crackling while playing and but no jumps or sticks. Still quite listenable. Cover may have heavy corner, edge wear or split seams.
G (GOOD) : Played a lot and more (but still playable), lot of scratches, crackles a lot while playing, may have jump or sticks and cover is damaged...so not so good ! This record must be very rare to be proposed in this state !!!
