Description
Here I have for sale the US stereo import of the superb jazz-based film soundtrack to 'The Spy Who Came in From the Cold' (1965), composed and conducted by Sol Kaplan. The movie starred Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, Oskar Werner, Sam Wanamaker and Cyril Cusack.
Sol Kaplan ?– The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (Music From The Score Of The Motion Picture) (1965)
Condition (refer also to notes at bottom): Vinyl – VG-EX. Wonderfully clean on visual inspection with just a few light scuffs on each side. Played just pre-listing and this stereo sound clarity is great throughout. Some light static and the odd click in places. A decent example.
Outer sleeve (cover) – VG. Colours are unfaded and no tears on the sleeve apart from top front right where there is tape and a punch hole. Still in shrinkwrap. Spine corners and edges are protected. Small dent/nick in spine seen from reverse. Aperture corners show slight wear. Sellotape along both sides of aperture edge has prevented marking and wear. Small area near top where shrinkwrap has torn. Punch hole near top right corner of front pierces to back. Reverse is clean and unmarked despite some discolouration along sellotape edge at aperture. Tiny tear towards top left corner.
Inner picture sleeve – VG-EX. Original RCA Victor. Paper with squared corners and sellotape along one side edge. Sleeve features album catalogue thumbnails vertically split with ‘The most trusted name in sound’ information about record production and RCA Victor Dynagroove Records. Pinhole in one side. Biro pen writing in top corner of the other. The odd crease/fold but intact.

This terrific sixties-style spy movie score was composed by Sol Kaplan.
John Le Carre's superb cold war espionage tale gets superb filming by Martin Ritt. Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, Oskar Werner, Sam Wanamaker star.
Unlike glamorous, exotic worlds of super-spy James Bond, ordinary protagonists of Le Carre's thriller play out their tense game in decidedly non-exotic shadows of East Berlin, West Berlin.
This RCA original score album was recorded in London in October 1965.
Sol Kaplan writes to moody, grim black and white story but infuses music with wide variety of styles: Brassy intro, melancholy main theme featuring sax, powerful John Barry-ish motif for "The Compound", haunting "Piano Prelude" variant of main theme, tentative, dark-hued "Cell Door" music, brazen "Pussy Willow Club" sequence, more.
Sequences of lean, austere material trade with dangerous, throbbing ideas. And always that memorable theme, close by. Also worthy of spotlighting: when score reaches conclusion, Kaplan returns to main theme but ultimately closes with unaccompanied solo sax for final cadence. Stark, powerful ending!
The 1960s era offers a plethora of cool movie and TV spy soundtracks, from Bond to U.N.C.L.E., from Flint to Palmer, from Matt Helm to I Spy. Kaplan's contribution, like the film it accompanies, is one of the finest.
