Description
ST. AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT – presents The Age of Aquarius (1970) Century-38825-10027 – VG/VG+ (cover/vinyl)
Very rare private issue by this top New Orleans black musical high school that has always featured the top marching band in the city – the “St. Aug 100”. Coordinated by New Orleans legendary arranger, producer and song writer Wardell Quezergue, this is a product of the era with the theme focused (somewhat) on the popular hippie production, “Hair.” There are two bands featured – the symphonic band (larger heavy brass symphony) and the stage band (smaller group with electrified instrumentation). The symphonic band does “Masque,” “Alla Barocco (Folk Rock),” “Harlem Nocturne,” “Broadway Curtain Time,” and selections from “Hair”, including “Aquarius,” and “Let the Sunshine In.” The stage band does three great tracks – “Soulful Three” by Wardell Quezergue, “Emancipation Blues” by Oliver Nelson, and “Spinning Wheel” arranged by Emanuel Morris, the electric bass player.
I’ve lived in New Orleans a long time, and I’ve never come across another copy of this since it was sold only locally mainly to members and family members of the band, and maybe at local performances. Considering Hurricane Katrina wiped out a lot of records, I can’t imagine very many of these are left at all.
This is a decent copy. The cover has some light yellowing/aging, a 3-inch seam split at top,a 6-inch seam split at bottom (from the jacket opening in on both) and a partially split spine on the bottom half of the spine.. The vinyl is remarkably clean and glossy and doesn’t have much play at all – just a few whisper scuffs that don’t affect play at all. I grade this conservatively: VG/Strong VG+ (cover/vinyl) – both toward the high-end of the grade.
This is an original pressing. I do not sell modern reissues.
