STEELE BEAUTTAH AFRICAN STOMP Afro funk Holy GRAIL!
Mega rare double-side from Kenya by Matata band leader!
Steele Beauttah (Steel) - African Stomp / Africa 7 inch Playa Sound / Soul Posters, France 197? SP10108 / Licensed from A.I.T. records, NairobiWOW! This must be the very best funk / disco tunes coming out of East Africa, period (though Soseme Makonde - Manzara comes near) - and both sides of this single are certified sureshot tracks. 'Africa' is a slow funky groover, where 'African stomp' is a discofied uptempo funk track. Both have Swahili lyrics, too (whereas the funky Matata tracks were almost all in English). Yet it's been a very, very hard to find single, both its Kenyan pressing and the French licensed edition which I am selling here - the number of collectors owning this record can easily be counted on one hand. The French press also has a very cool picture sleeve showing Steele and a 'Black Power' logo. This copy is in great condition and from a stamp on the back it shows that it actually stayed in Senegal for a while... true pan African spirit.
Steele Beauttah was the leader of Kenya's number one funk band Matata (whose JB-style albums are classics among funk collectors), he passed away a few years ago but in his prime with Matata he toured around the world and was recognized internationally. As far as I know he recorded only two solo singles.

Grading: Vinyl: VG to VG+. Plays great, very mild wear can be heard. Visually some hairline scratches and one inaudible scratch. Listen to the snippets above. Sleeve: VG. Mild dirt and wear on edges. See pics
