1980's "Gaucho" was Steely Dan's final album before embarking on their 20-year sabbatical from recording together again.

The recording of "Gaucho" was long & laborious, and one particularly treasured song, "The Second Arrangement," was tragically lost, having been accidentally erased by a careless engineer. That Becker & Fagen finally finished the album despite all of the behind-the-scenes problems must be considered a great miracle. Just seven tracks long, "Gaucho" is easily the lightest, most laid-back album in Steely Dan's catalog, but that certainly doesn't make it bad. It's a wonderful, handsome disc, filled with the fine quality jazz/pop & production skills that the Dan are famous for.

"Babylon Sisters" is a fine, slow & steady shuffler. "Hey Nineteen," the big hit from the album, is a bouncy, sparkly tune, and "Glamour Profession" is very groovy. The title song is more laid-back, but has marvelous melody to it. "Time Out Of Mind," the closest Steely Dan get to "rocking out" on this album, is a terrific toe-tapper, and arguably the best tune from the album. "My Rival" is a cool smooth-groover, and the finale, "Third World Man," with it's feeling of calm, is a tranquil, peaceful gem for Walt & Don to exit with. Thankfully, "Gaucho" was NOT the last we'd ever see from Steely Dan.

Aja, Steely Dan’s sixth studio opus, is yet another testament to Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s quest for sonic perfection. Such was the quality of the record that it has often been used to demonstrate the audio fidelity for stereo systems, and winning the 1978 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording. Produced by Gary Katz, the album peaked at No 3 in the States (where it went double platinum) and No. 5 in the UK, producing the hit singles ‘Peg’, ‘Deacon Blues’ and ‘Josie’ in the process. In a review that gave the album full marks, Q magazine described the record as "Sleek, smart, deliciously cynical, (this) was the Steely Dan album that effectively ring-fenced jazz-funk forevermore... what rich entertainment still."

"A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. Instead, it's a measured and textured album, filled with subtle melodies and accomplished, jazzy solos that blend easily into the lush instrumental backdrops. But Aja isn't just about texture, since Becker and Fagen's songs are their most complex and musically rich set of songs -- even the simplest song, the sunny pop of 'Peg,' has layers of jazzy vocal harmonies. In fact, Steely Dan ignores rock on Aja, preferring to fuse cool jazz, blues, and pop together in a seamless, seductive fashion." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic
