What a weird moment it was in the late 70's, when it seemed faintly possible that the foundational bands of punk would break through and become part of mainstream music. Here's Ric Ocasek of the Cars, a pop aggregation if there ever was one (though at the time they were, if not exactly New Wave, certainly considered to be surfing on the new wave) producing one of the more extremely uncommercial products of Max's Kansas City, Suicide.
In case you're reading this but not familiar with the band, Suicide was two people, one singer (Alan Vega) and one person on "instrument" (Martin Rev, on an electric keyboard with basic drum machine sounds built in. Rev would play insistent repetitive chords through a lot of echo and thumping Mo Tucker-style drum noise, while Vega sang, screamed, moaned, fell to the floor writhing, and basically emoted his way into convincing you that life was not worth living. They were great.
"Dream Baby Dream" was a high point I think, and this 12" 45 RPM long version is definitely the way to hear it. It's the original UK 1979 issue, NM- vinyl (the lightest surface sounds on Side B), and the matrix run-out grooves are etched with typical slogans: Side A says "We're all still Frankies" and SIde B reads "It's doomsday, doomsday." There's nothing more to say.
