Second long play from revered Quebec 60's garage band, The Sultans, who recorded just 3 Long Plays between 1966 and 1968.

"Often called Les Sultans’ Rubber Soul, I’m hearing something more akin to the French Canadian Forever Changes here, with a dash of Younger Than Yesterday. This is brilliant stuff, and if you’re not xenophobic towards occasional French vocals (some are in English), Express has every right to nudge its way between all the other great albums of 1967. The jangly opener “Pour Qui Pourquoi” is top-shelf stuff, a garage folk shaker pitched somewhere between a Curt Boettcher sunshine pop song and the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” The trebly garage pop ballad “Bring Her Back” – sung in English, obviously – is an absolutely stone-cold killer folk pop lost masterpiece, while the bluesy “Sticks And Stones” – also in English – provides a great snotty garage punk edge to the record, and the singer does an excellent Country Joe and the Fish impersonation. Or check out “Looking Through You,” not a Beatles cover, which proves that there were some tremendous gossamer-sweet soft pop concoctions being created up North that could’ve rivaled the likes of the Vejtables and the Assocation down these parts. Les Sultans’ Express may not be Rubber Soul as some have hyped it, but I dare say it’s far, far better than that – a French Canadian distillation of the folk pop sounds of California and Haight-Ashbury in 1967. It’s a flawless album. Makes me wonder if they ever opened for the Charlatans at the Fillmore West."
