THE OWL & THE PUSSYCAT/LIGHT OF LOVE (Capitol #2148 PROMO 1st pressing, 1967): UNPLAYED MINT GEM 45!
Rare 1967 UNPLAYED MINT GEM white-label promo of a Pacific Northwest band that deserves a primo spot in the Censored Singles Hall Of Fame!
Pride of Moses Lake, Washington The Bards recorded The Owl & The Pussycat in Seattle & Capitol picked it up for national distribution. The sound was Jefferson Airplane-ish, but what drew the disapproval of 1967 AM-radio DJs & programmers was the lyrics:
"O lovely pussy! O pussy, my love, what a beautiful pussy you are; what a beautiful pussy you are!"
This scandalous stanza, written by Edward Lear in 1871, was in fact a love song from an owl to a pussycat. That didn't matter to 1967 broadcasters. 19th-century poet Lear thoughtlessly failed to specify C-A-T in the refrain & The Bards found themselves banned from the airwaves just about everywhere. Capitol tried to bail by touting flip side Light Of Love as the A-side. Too late...the single failed to chart in the Hot 100. Despite the band's opening gigs for The Dave Clark 5, The Young Rascals & The Turtles, they never broke through to national success.
Here's a super-scarce early white-label promo of this controversial 45. Capitol's name doesn't appear anywhere on the labels, almost as if they could see the storm a-brewin'; the only indication it's their release is record #2148 (this catalog number later appears on Capitol stock 2nd pressings with the familiar orange-and-yellow-swirl label).
