Description

redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This rare and little-known 2LP gatefold set – a superb collector’s copy* – from Die Deutsche Stifung Musikleben (DSM 101-102, German pressing, green/silver labels, stereo) features “live” performances by young musicians, most notably among them the clarinetist Sabine Meyer and the violinist Christian Tetzlaff, both of whom would go on to lead brilliant careers.

The former is heard with the distinguished Cherubini Quartet, while the latter is accompanied by a string orchestra comprised – amazingly! – of the Concertmasters of the BPO, the Hamburg Philharmonic, the Hamburg Symphony, the Bavarian RSO, and the NDR Symphony Orchestra.

*Please note: There is one pressing fault concerning this set: the labels for the 2 LPs were switched during the production process. Thus, the LP labeled with the Tchaikovsky Fifth is actually the Mozart Quintet and vice versa. Of course, none of this affects play whatsoever.

The exact contents are as follows:

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op. 64

> with Volker Wangenheim conducting the Bundesjugendorchester

(rec. 7 April 1983 at the Stadthalle Waldshut)

J.S. Bach: Concerto for 3 Violins and String Orchestra in D Major BWV 1064

> with soloists Christian Tetzlaff, Jens Oppermann, and Dagmar Schwalke, violins

> accompanied by the aforementioned concertmasters from many of Germany’s leading orchestras

(rec. 9 April 1983 at the Katholische Akademie Hamburg)

Mozart: Clarinet Quintet in A Major K. 581

> with Sabine Meyer, clarinet

> accompanied by the Cherubini Quartet

            Christoph Poppen

            Harald Schoneweg

            Hariolf Schlichting

            Klaus Kämper

(rec. 9 April 1983 at the Katholische Akademie Hamburg)

To my knowledge, these performances have never been made available on compact disc and remain among the most elusive titles in the respective discographies of Sabine Meyer and Christian Tetzlaff. The production values of this set are exemplary in every way.

The interior panels of the gatefold jacket carry extensive notes and photos taken during these memorable concerts – all texts in German only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the gatefold jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear to the top of the spine, and a bit along the spine as well, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a truly excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT throughout and playback is superb in both – overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
