💿 DESCRIPTION

This album is a foundational compilation released on SAR Records, the pioneering label founded by Sam Cooke and James W. Alexander in 1959. The record serves as a sonic genealogy of the "Gospel Pearl" sound, tracing the history of The Soul Stirrers from their inception in 1934. It highlights the transition of leadership within the group: from the influential R.H. Harris, who set the standard for gospel quartet singing, to his protégé Sam Cooke, who joined in 1950 and eventually transformed the genre before crossing over to secular soul music. The liner notes, written by Alexander himself, emphasize the shared "brilliant yet soulful interpretation" that defines these artists.

💎 CONDITION vinyl: very good (VG) cover: very good (VG) 🧾 NOTES FOR COLLECTORS
  • This is a highly desirable original 1962 mono pressing. SAR Records items are increasingly rare, as the label's catalog was relatively small and its distribution was limited before Sam Cooke's untimely passing. Unlike later reissues, this edition features the authentic yellow and green SAR labels. A key detail for collectors is the "H" stamp in the runout groove, which identifies this as a high-quality pressing from the RCA Records Pressing Plant in Hollywood.
