Description
Saturn 78 rpm Picture Disc, Hungarian Gipsy Orchestra
Vintage Saturn 12" 78rpm Picture Disc, T-801.
Hungarian Echoes b/w The Two Guitars (Russian Folklore Music). An extremely attractive early picture disc. In general playing surfaces have a very clean appearance, and are free of scuffs or scratches, although a few grey patches and light surface scuffs to B side. There are a few problems however. There are about three instances of slight hairline raise patches to the outer surface. These are probably indicative of hairline splits, but the disc is still very firm, as presumably the method of manufacture means that cracks in the actual shellac are held in place by the outer coating. Pressing gently either side of the noticeable hairline raises in three places shows the very lightest amount of give, but the 78 still holds together extremely well.
Playback has been given a cursory test on a 33/45rpm only deck, and with a stylus not ideal for these purposes, but it does appear that the 78 plays through without skipping, although the sufaces are noisy. Presumably playback with a stylus more suited to the task would produce better results.
Nonetheless a scarce item, and although imperfect, displays very nicely.
