Up for sale is a super rare 10 inch shellac 78 RPM record (SP) with two great early hot jazz pieces by an obscure but under-appreciated orchestra band leader.   It's been several years since this record last came up for auction.

Label: Gennett (Division of The Starr Piano Co., Richmond, Indiana) Artist:  Saxi Holsworth and his Orchestra NOTE:  The last name as printed on the record is "Holsworth".  My research shows that his actual last name may have been "Holtsworth".  See below. Recorded and released in 1924 A side (5508-A):  Charleston Cabin (Reber)  [This side also has the numbers 8987 824.] B side (5508-B):  A New Kind of A Man (Clare-Flatoco)  [This side also has the numbers 8988 824.]
Saxi Holsworth (or Holtsworth) was active on the vaudeville circuit (including the Orpheum), primarily in New York, in the late teens and early 20s.  He recorded on the Emerson and the Gennett labels.  At one time his band was called Saxi Holtsworth's Harmony Hounds.  I was able to find the following listing of the band members.  (Note:  I don't know if all of the following performed the songs on this record..)

Early in his career, Saxi's band performed with dancers Roscoe Ails and Midgie Miller.  In 1920, the ensemble was signed to a very large contract with Orpheum as a touring show, but the deal was scotched when Ails backed out and the contract was canceled.  Subsequently, Saxi paired with jazz dancer Mel Craig and performed at the Harlem Opera House under the billing of "Craig and Holtsworth".
