Condition - Examined Under Bright Light
Cover is VG+. The front cover graphics are beautiful and vivid. A touch of wear and rounding on the corners. The printing on the edge is sharp and clear. Nice seams with no splits. The back cover slick shows some age toning and light surface with a signature in ink and a price sticker in the upper left corner. "Printed and Packaged by GEM Albums, Inc. N.Y." on the bottom right corner. A pretty example of this cover despite the flaws.
LP is a strong glossy VG with sleeve marks, scuffing, and hairlines, nothing feelable or serious. The marks do not cover the LP but there are more than a few, mostly on the outside edge area and trail-off wax. Labels are beautiful with a few light spindle marks visible under bright angled light. A decent example of this rare and desireable early Prestige.
I did play test this record and thought it sounded quite good. Some background noise here and there but nothing that impacted the beauty of the music. No skips or any loud noises. In particular I enjoyed how rich Sonny's horn sounded and the bite and clarity of Max Roace's drums. My set-up is modest but effective - Theil 1.2 speakers, Scott 220 tube amp (mono setting), and a basic Pro-Ject turntable with a Grado Black cartridge. Of course, YMMV.
Overall not perfect or NM but a decent copy (and IMHO an excellent play copy) of one of the most famous and desired vintage jazz LP's. This copy should some collector very happy. Grading
Grading is SS (still sealed), NM, VG+, VG. The myriad of grading systems on Ebay is a good indicator of the subjective nature of grading. In my opinion NM is close to perfect with one or two very minor flaws, VG+ is above average and collectable and VG is average used condition but probably the best choice for playing. I'm a collector and try to describe LPs as accurately as possible, the way I would want them described to me. The pictures should at least give a good indication of the condition of the covers and labels. Please see my seller feedback for comments on my grading. If you don't agree with how I'm calling a record that is your privilege but with all respect please don't bid.
