HMV initiated “Beethoven Society Recordings” on a subscription basis in advance of recording, and, at a time when Beethoven’s sonatas for piano were not as popular as a cycle as nowadays, the marketing was quite a success.  Indeed, the records in one form or another have remained in the catalogue for nearly 80 years.  In addition to the sonatas, a number of shorter and longer pieces were also recorded, including the Diabelli Variations, and by the time the project was completed in 1935, it amounted to fifteen volumes and a total of more than 200 sides of shellac.  The total cost of a hundred 78s was beyond most people’s pockets in those days; whichever transfers are chosen by today’s collectors are a real bargain in comparison to what one’s parents or grandparents had to pay.

RECORDS EX/EX-  (2-3) few light scuffs& rubs , no heavy scratches , ,some sides are close to Near Mint , high shiny , no cracks , no scratches , one record has surface waved ,labels are perfect clean with not spindle scratches , so all the records plays well with normal surface noise & some tics only , to plays with more heavy cartridge one record


TESTED ON ONE TURNTABLE LENCO L/75 S , AND AUDIO-TECHNICA 3/SP MC CARTRIDGE , WEIGHT 5,5 GR.
If a record's audio differs substantially from the visual grade, I will make note of it.

L.P. or 78 RPM  Visual Grading Standards
Mint (1) (appear new or played twice , no wear at all)
Near Mint  (1-2) Almost New. Might have a slight paper scuff or hairline.  Plays, with no noise that is due to visible imperfections.One of the  Highest grade I use.
Excellent (2 ) Very Clean Records,  Well taken care of.  Some light scuffs and hairlines, a few light marks.  Plays very  well with only few light clics or minimal surface noise .
Very Good+ (3) Well taken care of.  A few scuffs, possibly a few light scratches and marks.  Minimum of distracting noise, some light rubs & light greying are possibles .
Very Good (3/4) Not especially well taken care of, but not abused either.  Light scratches, scuffs and marks.  Plays with some background noise but is still enjoyable and collectible. Not totally gloss.  Probably not kept in sleeve , greying is more evident , rubs are numerous .
Very Good- (4)  Many scratches, scuffs and marks which are more numerous than Vg.  A bit more noise.  Not much gloss.
Good+ (4/5)  Very Used  , many scratches and marks, dirtier looking with little or no gloss.  Plays through with moderate noise, distracting to some also up of level of music. May not be good enough for playing   .
Good (5) Possible jumps or skips.  Noise approaching up the level of music.  Probably has seen some some time on floor .
