DETAILED DESCRIPTION . . .

Several acoustic "Hill & Dale" Pathe 78s (1910-1920 approx.)
which do not play on normal gramophones.  (Various sizes.)

For starters, the vibrations in "hill & dale" grooves move the opposite way to those of
an ordinary 78 rpm. record, so at first you don't get any sound out of them.  The trick is
to cross the wires in your stereo pick-up (it has to be stereo) so that they are "out of
phase" and press mono on your amplifier (this is important).  [It can be done through
your computer if that is how you record things - you can record in stereo and combine
the two channels for mono.]

That is all very well, but some of them play at 90 r.p.m.  Fine, that is double 45.  Or if
you have a vary-speed turntable such as a Lenco L.75, that is good but it only reaches
about 86 rpm.  (I've bent the wire in mine, under the turntable, so it just tops the 90!)

And the grooves appear to be very shallow and rounded so your turntable needs to be
very level and your pick-up tracking needs to be well balanced.  Not usually a problem.

Sadly, people are throwing out these old records because they can't get them to play!

Condition of each disc described below :
(fairly randomly, not in the same order as the photos)

1.  78819/20. Departure Of The Troopship / Return Of The Troopship.  (90 rpm.)
(Descriptive).  Well worn at start (centre), small crack (approx. 1 in.) at edge.

2.  41235/44.  Weymouth Chimes / The Bells Of St. Malo.
Well worn at the start (centre) but very good otherwise.  (90 rpm.)

3.  78128/29.  Paris-Brussels / The Parisien.

A bit worn at the centre start but very good.  (90 rpm.)

4.  60170/71.  Widdicombe Fair / Border Ballad,
sung by Chas. Tree (his name is
mistaken on one side.)  (90 rpm.)
Edge chip, has been "repaired" with wood filler.  Luckily, this type plays from the
label outwards so you can catch it just as the song finishes.  Otherwise very good
but a fine crack from the chip a small distance (less than 1 in.) towards the label.

5.  77714/15.  Casey & His Fiddle / Casey's Concert Party by Russell Hunting.
     Edge chip,
has again been "repaired" with wood filler and again it plays from the
label outwards.  From memory, no musical grooves are lost.  This one also has a

fine 1" crack from the edge towards the label.  (90 rpm.)

6.  No. 6053.  Les Patineurs / Les Sirenes (Waldteufel).
(Edge start, 80 rpm.)
Good condition except for a 4 cm. (1.5 in.) crack from edge towards the centre.

7.  No. 1126.  Missouri Waltz / The Moonlight Waltz.  (Edge start, 80 rpm.)
     Very good, no noteworthy faults.

8.  No. A 339.  Poor Wand'ring One (Pirates Of Penzance) / The Swallows,

sung by Miss Esta d'Argo.  (Edge start, 80 rpm.)
     5 cm. (2 in.) crack
from edge.  Otherwise good.  Nice record anyway.

9.  No. A 143.  A Perfect Day / A Dream,  Mr. Hughues Macklin.
(Edge start, 80.)
6 cm. (2.5 in.) crack from edge.  Otherwise good.

. . . And two more - but they're both badly cracked.  (Some of the cracks have been
superglued at the edge to hold them.)

Postage for this item will be £9.00 - but they're free to collect from Liskeard, Cornwall.
Discount allowed where possible -
PLEASE AWAIT INVOICE IF BUYING MORE THAN  1.

These fragile records will be well packaged for full protection in the post.  (I am well
experienced with posting 78s.)
