I am auctioning my (1971) Sheffield Labs Recording S9 (SL2-9/SL1-4) Lincoln Mayorga and Distinguished Colleagues. I assume if you are reading this you know the history of this LP and its rarity and that it is highly collectable. I was given this copy in 1973 by an Acoustic Engineer and close friend of mine and was the first recordings' that ever left me in TRUE audio-awe!!. Good luck and thanks for looking.
I have over 600 Albums and many are audiophile recordings as this album is. Selling them all as well as much of my audio equipment - It is just time to down size....
My albums after 1975 have always been played on Mid-Fi or higher end equipment (most currently a Music Hall MMF5 Turntable with Goldring 1012 GX cart) with great care given to handing, disc playing protocol and storage.Condition: Cover Jacket- VG- , binding is totally readable, Color is very good except some rub on face of jacket pictured, Rear shows small area of paper pieces missing and lower right corner dog ear pictured.
Spindle Hole- Side one NM-, Side two NM-
Inner Sleeve- Very Good-Paper liner with static free disc protection with no fade.
LP Record- VG as noted, In normal light looks EX-, In high intensity light it is VG as it has normal light surface marks from jacket sleeve, and normal light scratches that do not interfere with the quality of the recording, it tracks and plays perfectly. It has not been cleaned.
Addition: I found this thread (below) on the internet today, so it looks like I was mistaken about the 1971 date. Looks like it was 1968. I knew it was the first recording but I am sorry about the dating mix up. It is 1968.
DID YOU KNOW? This is the very first Direct To Disc album by Lincoln Mayorga (Sheffield S-9). It was done way back in 1968 as something of an experiment, and as such; was done in very small qualities of less than 1000, which is why it is so rare now over 40 years later. It was sent out to Stereo stores, and was an immediate hit as a demo record because nobody had ever made a recording that was this dynamic before. It is literally the very first modern day audiophile recording. It made people realize that recordings could sound much better than what the major labels were putting out, and it created a whole new "Audiophile" industry of Direct Disc, Half Speed, DBX and digital recordings. It is truly a piece of music history.
I am now using "Record Collector" Magazine grading. Also adding a Near Mint (NM) between a Mint (M) and an Excellent (EX) Grade. I may add the + if I feel the condition is better or a - if less then the listed ratings' describe. Even new unopened records have a surface noise here and there depending on your equipment. A VG Record will also have some surface noise as it is the nature of the media.
RECORD COLLECTORS GRADING SYSTEM
Mint (M) The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet. booklet or poster are in perfect condiition. Records marked as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint. Excellent (EX) The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or minor creasing. Very Good (VG) The record has obviously been played many times, but displayes no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any moajor defects is acceptable Good (G) The record has been played so much that the sound quality has notceably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc Fair (F) The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced. Poor (P) The record will not play properly due to scratched, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing Bad (B) The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-fillerPLEASE CONSIDER THAT RECORD GRADING IS SUBJECTIVE.
I grade conservatively in describing the record and Jacket. I also grade visually according to my own experience as a long time record collector and I believe my standards are high so I am sure my rating will represent the item(s) accurately.
