VINYL RECORD ONLY - NO SLEEVE

Shirley Collins

"The Power Of The True-Love Knot"

Incredibly rare vinyl album on the Polydor Records label from 1968

Polydor Catalogue # 583025    (The Matrix numbers are 583025 A//1^420 & 583025 B//^420)

This vinyl album (vinyl record only) is visually in excellent used condition. It is not new, but certainly much better than very good by a long way.

The vinyl condition is very bright, full gloss and is much, much better than very good.... it appeared almost as new at first glance, but there are clearly some surface marks on closer inspection so it has definitely been played and handled since it was first pressed in 1968. However, as I've had it for well over 30 years now without playing it, it is still exactly as I first bought it and I have never bought a badly marked album. Sadly the sleeve has always been missing.

Find yourself a great sleeve with a very rough disc and voila, you'll have yourself the perfect match that would be worth around £80 to £100 at todays valuations......

Will be supplied in its original paper & cellophane inner sleeve with a plain black card outer sleeve, protected by corrugated card

Album Information :

"..... While credited to Shirley Collins, this 1967 album is really the work of Collins and her sister, Dolly Collins, who provides the fascinating instrumental settings courtesy of a modern reproduction of a 1643 miniature pipe organ, with its distinctive flutey sound. That sound, combined with Dolly Collins' arrangements and keyboard decorations, give these traditional songs the sound of early music: restrained and almost medieval.  But above all, it's Shirley Collins' voice that brings these pieces to life. Breathy and often artless, there's a sincerity and depth to it that's both warm and undeniable. She lives these pieces, whether it's the tale of "Lovely Joan" or the ballad sadness of "Barbara Allen" (surely one of the best-known of all traditional songs on both sides of the Atlantic). It's easy to forget in the mists of time that during the late '60s, this particular adventurous strand of folk music found an audience outside the genre, when the Collins sisters signed to the progressive label Harvest. Before the folk-rock of Fairport Convention, Collins herself was already breaking boundaries, and this disc, with its pristine Joe Boyd production, was one of the first to demolish those barriers. So not only is it a small musical masterpiece, it's seminal in the modern history of folk music........"

".... I have heard three Shirley Collins albums and this is my favorite..the other two I've heard being 'Death and The Lady', 'Anthems in Eden'. This album is instrumentally a bit more stripped down than those two with Shirley’s strong and clear voice accompanied by discrete Pipe Organ, Guitar, Dulcimer and Banjo with assorted handclaps and additional instrumentation provided by Mike Heron and Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band. All the songs are traditional (largely) English ballads with the usual stories of lost love and approaching doom...but with an added hippy dippy surreal beauty that will make this album as much as a treasure to folk traditionalists as to fans of the Vashti Bunyans and Devandra Banharts of this world. Never has such ancient folk music sounded as relevant and as contemporary as on this (record)......"
