"The queen of English folk, Shirley Collins rarely sounded better than on this anachronistic masterpiece. This is a magnificent album - dark, brooding and oh so very English. Backed by her musical genius sister Dolly and an array of traditional musicians, the sound is unique and won't be for everyone but if .... you want to delve deeper then this is about as far as you can go. Even if you find it hard work musically, Shirley's voice (probably at its peak on this album) and the tales it spins will soon draw you in and if you can get to grips with it, your reward is the rest of her back catalogue and all the wonderful (and more accessable) gems it contains."
