• Label & Cat #: 1963? Folkways Records – FL 9728 *the "121 W. 47th St." address on label does not appear in any discographies, but was used with various copyright dates throughout the 1960s
• Vinyl Grade: Excellent (EX) / Very Good (VG) play graded *Side 1 plays exceptional (EX) with only a few instances of extraneous noise. Side 2 played Very Good (VG) with some light & intermittent background noise including a couple sequences of ticks. Entire story was still very listenable and the occasional noise disturbances were distracting, but not overpowering. 
• Cover Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) *Very nice soft textured jacket with a minimal amount of light shelf wear - small paper peel on front and the top rh corner is split open @1" and the bottom just slightly.
• Booklet: Excellent (EX) *the 8-page booklet is in near perfect condition. It contains the complete text of both short stories. Folkways booklet order form also included.
• Notes:  "The Daemon Lover" and "The Lottery" are two of Shirley Jackson's most famous short stories,and they are featured on this single Smithsonian Folkways recording of the artist reading her own work. Both stories are quintessential examples of her unsettling gothic style, exploring themes of isolation, conformity, and societal danger, especially toward women. "The Lottery" is perhaps Jackson's most famous and controversial work. It describes a small, seemingly peaceful American village that gathers annually for a community event. The tone is pleasant and ordinary until the shocking conclusion, where the "winner" of the lottery is stoned to death by their neighbors as a ritual sacrifice to ensure a good harvest. "Adventures of the Daemon Lover," follows an unnamed woman in a city who is searching for her missing fiancé, James Harris. Her quest becomes increasingly surreal as she navigates indifferent city streets and encounters strange, unhelpful characters, blurring the line between reality and illusion. Both stories demonstrate Jackson's mastery of psychological horror, using realistic, everyday settings to expose the unsettling darkness lurking beneath ordinary life.

GRADING STANDARDS: (M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way.  Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
(NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident. 
(EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear. 
(VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.
(VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming. 
(G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
