Many songs shout the word “EIGHTIES!” at your face, whether you like it or not. In this regard, there aren’t many releases that outdo the wonderful ‘Love Missile F1-11?.
Written by Sigue Sigue Sputnik in 1986 and featuring on the album Flaunt It!, it was a little late to the synthpop trend but well-placed nonetheless. While the band had limited popularity with other songs, this is the only work that will ever be remembered, and for two massive reasons.
In the same year as the tune was released, the excellent Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was released, essentially making a name for Matthew Broderick and making people ask… well, was Ferris even real? Whatever your theory, the upbeat song was beautifully-placed in the movie.
Additionally, Wave 103, a well-known radio station among gamers, shortlisted the tune among some other greats including ‘Two Tribes’ by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and future One Hit Wonderland choice ‘Japanese Boy’ by Aneka. Then again, as with every other game in the popular series, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was always going to deliver the goods with its soundtrack.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik essentially disappeared as soon as they arrived, though this will always be a great piece of music. ‘Love Missile F1-11? was one of few songs in the genre to use sampling as extensively as it did; sadly, this rubs off a little bit too much in the video, which is an homage to the Japanese culture the band were in love with.
