Description
Up for auction is one of the top Simple Minds collectables, an uncut version of the Don't You Forget About Me shaped pic disc. The standard version of this pic disc was shaped, with the design extending past the 7" playing surface. The records were originally pressed as 12", with a machine in the factory used to cut the discs to shape. However, this copy (and a handful of others) escaped the factory uncut, meaning that it is 12" in size with the excess material around the outside. Most of these would not have left the factory, but some were taken by factory workers.
In this case, the record was originally owned by someone who got it back in the 80s, from a friend who worked at the Virgin pressing plant. The record has never been played and has sat in his cupboard since then.
The plastic around the edges was originally clear, but has discoloured due to Virgin's use of non-UV stablised polycarbonate, which browns when exposed to sunlight. The central part of the disc is not affected. The previous owner was English, but brought it to Spain where he lived for many years, thus the sunlight was something unavoidable. However, he stored it in his cupboard flat, so there are no issues with the pressing itself.
