By 1971, Sly & the Family Stone had already become legends of the psychedelic era with their acclaimed album Stand!, along with their performance at Woodstock. With the sixties behind them and questions regarding the band's ability to continue to produce hits, Sly recorded "There's a Riot Goin' On", a much darker, more introspective and politically-tinged record than their previous material. Met with mixed feelings upon release, the album has since been re-evaluated, even being named one of Rolling Stone's top 100 albums of all time.
