Brief Artist & Album Info: "The Autumn Stone" was the only double LP in the history of Immediate Records, and it came out as the company was entering its death throes, a desperate effort to cash in on the library of tapes of the Small Faces. When lead singer Steve Marriott quit in the waning days of 1968, the group had been midway into recording a new album that would have been its third for the label and a follow-up to 1968's popular Ogden's Nut Gone Flake. Left high and dry by Marriott's departure, and with an uncertain future ahead for the group, the company elected to release the first anthology of the Small Faces' work. The result was The Autumn Stone, a mix of hit singles (going all the way back to their Decca Records years, with "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" and "All or Nothing") and up through their final 45, "The Universal," plus three songs recorded live at Newcastle Town Hall in early 1968, a bunch of album tracks, and some unissued tracks from the tail-end of their history, presumably intended for their third, never-finished Immediate LP. It was the first (and, for over 20 years, the best) overview of the group's work and history, depicting its transition from a white British Invasion-era soul band to a more laid-back and experimental psychedelic outfit.
The double album contains most of the Small Faces' Immediate and Decca original 7" single releases, together with live recordings from a concert at Newcastle City Hall and previously unreleased material, some of which was possibly intended for the band's projected but unrealised fourth LP, 1862.
Alongside the title track, the album contained an alternate version of "Afterglow Of Your Love" (which had been released as the Small Faces' final single earlier in the year), covers of two Tim Hardin songs ("If I Were A Carpenter" and "Red Balloon") and the instrumentals "Wide Eyed Girl On The Wall" and "Collibosher" (both of which are claimed to be unfinished backing tracks by the compilers of the Here Comes The Nice box set).
The title track "The Autumn Stone" and "Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am" (its correct title, according to composer Steve Marriott - 'Wham Bam Thank You Man', as it was titled on the Afterglow single where the song first found release in March 1969, was apparently a label misprint) had originally been recorded on September the 11th 1968 as the a and b sides of a projected but ultimately unreleased single. This recording session proved to be the band's final studio work together aside from some session work in Paris with Peter Frampton for a Johnny Halliday album in December.
The Autumn Stone album was released by Immediate Records founder Andrew Loog Oldham in November 1969, more than six months after the band had officially announced their break up, and three months after Steve Marriott's new band Humble Pie had released their own debut LP. In Germany, a single LP version with only the 'new' material was released under the title In Memoriam.
CONDITION
Labels: The Pink Immediate with Black Print Labels are All in SUPER condition with only Very light signs of Spindle Wear or Spider Marks. (Only noticable when held to light) There are no Tears, Marks or Writing anywhere. All of the Black Print is Unfaded and readable. I would easily grade these as Very Good++Excellent!!!! If Not better.
Vinyl: Plays throughout absolutely Fine with only the odd couple of Pops on Disc 1: side 1: and Very light background noise but there are no Jumps. The records still contain that glossy sheen though there are several surface marks and thumbnails to be seen, these in NO way interfere with the Very Good sound quality. This Album plays up to and beyond its high visual grading with hardly anything of note apart from the odd Pop to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical polished production from the Small Faces. Minimal surface sound and no tracking issues. This play-grade proved a real pleasure when playing this fast disappearing album, this being the first example I have had for some time, and possibly the best all-round one for me yet. It will prove quite difficult to find a significantly better copy and merits a very strong recommendation. I would grade both sides as Very Good++!!!!
Cover/Sleeve: This is a Gatefold format Printed In England by Immediate Record Company Ltd. 111 Gloucester Place London W1. and is the Only Gatefold made by Immediate. There are no Rips, Tears or Writing anywhere to be seen. and All of the Printing Inside and Out is readable and Unfaded. Sadly there is some Edge wear and the corners are slightly Bumped. There is also the odd Crease but these are not Splits or Tears and the opening edges are slightly Worn. The Spine has two or three Creases but the Printing is readable. Because of the nature of it's construction and age Most of the Faults I have mentioned Should be expected. This Cover is incredibly difficult to find in Excellent or better condition however I would be happy enough to grade this as Very Good/Very Good++!!!!
Cover/Sleeve Summary: Not seen often, this one is in Nice condition with only reasonable clues of age. This classic cover should (as described) please Many collectors.
Inner Sleeve/s: There is hardly any creasing and all edges are unsplit with no repairs. Graded as Very Good++!!!!
Album Played For Grading: I play/grade ALL records I offer before submitting, I also play them in their entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end. I use a Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge and Linn Lingo, with my Linn system and Forest Totem Speakers. This system is guaranteed to pick up any distortion or interference within the sound.
Grading: In my opinion I REFUSE to believe that there is ANY record that can be truly graded as Mint, the BEST that could be offered is Mint- (minus)!!!! Especially so from the 50's, 60's, 70's or up to the present date!!!! Even copies bought new today would have some form of imperfection on the Record or Cover!!!! Under that assumption I will NEVER use the word Mint in any of my descriptions and Mint- is the HIGHEST grade I would ever use. So I will only offer Excellent, Good or Poor with a -(minus), +(plus) or ++(plus, plus)!!!!
Bid With Confidence: I take great care and pride with what I sell and offer a FULL money back guarantee, in the unlikely event of the buyer not agreeing with my description. As long as the item is repacked and returned to me in the same condition it was sent.
Postage: All of my records will be professionally packaged. I use Dependapack Vinyl Record Mailers that have locking tab closures with strong locking tab record wraps. I also use corrugated record stiffeners and extra strong tape marked with Handle With Care. This is to ensure your Valuable Record/s are protected whilst in transit. I will add a nominal fee of .40p to my postage and packaging for this service. Any Record valued at £100 or more I would prefer to send by Special Deliver/International Signed For.
