Description
So here we go... this is hard for me, but up for auction is the original Hut vinyl of The Smashing Pumpkins' "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness." It is a relatively low number, #2876. I purchased it four years ago. Since it has been in my care, I have kept it lovingly and respecfully, and to the best of my knowledge it has not degraded in quality at all.
As I'm sure you know (since there are very few casual listeners who vie for this version of the album,) it contains three vinyls, six sides. All vinyl versions of this album have a different track listing from the CD (not "better" or "worse"... just different. Makes for a more unique experience with the vinyl.) It also has 2 tracks not on the CD on "Starlight," a beautiful reprise of "Tonight Tonight" and an instrumental closing track titled "Infinite Sadness".
-"Dawn" (side a) has a medium scratch (not that deep, but does pop a little through the first song) running from the rim in towards the center. There are a few other light scuffs, but nothing that effects play .
-"Tea Time" has a similar scratch, which pops twice during the first song (Jellybelly, so it is a bit less noticable because it is a heavier song) and a few others that don't effect play. "To Forgive" has a few pops.
-"Dusk" has only a few light scratches and scuffs.
-"Twilight" looks great, no scratches or scuffs that i can see. A little roughness just before 1979 but that ends when the song starts. Heard only a few pops.
-"Midnight" looks clear, a little bit of background noise on the first song.
-"Starlight" is free of visible scratches, but pops a bit (more noticeable because they are quieter songs.)
The jacket has a few flaws, but they are mostly normal wear around the corners and edges. One point of interest though is that the original owner put clear tape over a tear on the bottom of each flap of the gatefold (where the bottom part of the vinyl tends to split the jacket) to stop the tear from spreading any further. From the back, the upper left-hand corner has a crease in it, and also two small ones on the back towards the inner fold of the jacket. The image and color quality itself is still stunning, no image-degrading scuffing to that. It has been kept in a plastic jacket it's whole life. If you tilt it in the light and try really hard, you can see a few scuffs, but nothing that effects a general appreciation of the artwork. The sleeves for the vinyl I believe are the original paper and clear plastic lined sleeves.
I have done my best to be as thorough as possible to describe the slight flaws of this album, having not the knowledge to use the generic mint, near mint, good, etc ratings. Honestly, reading them makes it sound more serious than experiencing them. It is a beautiful thing to play.
