THE OLD RUGGED CROSS (Bernard) The Lockland Baptist Church through the ministry of the Landmark Hour proudly presents the golden voice of Solomon King. Our church does not claim any influence in winning him to Christ. He was saved alone while very ill in the hospital. It would be a long story to enumerate how step by step God had closed in on his life until that night when he cried out of a soul burdened with sin, loneliness and despair for a peace he had never experienced. It was in the hospital room where he actually came to grips with the reality of salva- tion, but he did not know the full impact of what had happened to him until, through a mutual friend, he came to my office. For the first time he publicly confessed that Jesus Christ had become his Lord and Saviour. One of the many remarkable things about his conversion is that he had already written a song that extols and magnifies the name of Jesus which you will hear on this recording before he really knew what happened in his heart. He, knew something had happened, but he could not put it into words, not having any knowledge whatsoever of the teachings of the New Testament. His salvation is a close parallel to that of Saul of Tarsus and we believe there lies before him a great ministry in singing and testifying for Jesus Christ. For fourteen years he had lived a happy, carefree life, singing in night clubs, on radio and television, and movies. He worked with some outstand- ing artists in the entertainment field. Yet, all of that with its passing glamour and thrill, could not give to him the peace that he has found alone with Jesus Christ. It is the prayer of the Lockland Baptist Church that God will give this first album of gospel songs, many of which Solomon King wrote, wide dis- tribution and from the proceeds he may be able to acquire seminary training that will enable him to do a more effective work for our Lord. In the few weeks since Solomon's conversion, thousands have heard him on our Landmark Hour broadcast and in other churches and they've been lifted into heavenly places by his singing. When you've heard this album, you will realize what a trophy of grace Solomon really is for the work of the Master. Therefore, we commend him, our brother in Christ, to you, that through his ministry multitudes will be brought closer to the Master by the ministry of song. __DR. JOHN W RAWLINGS, pastor of Lockland Baptist Church & director of the Landmark Hour broadcast, P. O. Box 66, Cincinnati 15, Ohio SOLOMON KING S OWN STORY I write this testimony with great joy from my heart because I have experienced one of the greatest joys and happiness that I will ever have. I feel that the experience which I’ve just had, of all the years I’ve spent in show business — fourteen years, to be exact, working with great people as Sam Levinson, Herb Shriner, Jerry Lewis; and here in Cincinnati, on the Ruth Lyon’s show and performing in the night clubs at the Surf Club, Stein’s Hideaway and the Blue Angel, and singing on WLW-TV — I feel that all these years haven’t given me any amount of happiness that the joy of finding the new birth, or being reborn again, gives my heart. A few weeks ago I lay in the Jew- ish Hospital here in Cincinnati, stricken with a sickness which took my body temperature up to 105 de- grees; I was brought to the hospital in an ambulance, 'hardly able to speak. Up to this time it seemed like life itself was coming to an end for me. Financially, I was up against the wall, having a wife and son, with another baby on the Way, no job, in debt, and feeling that I just couldn’t get a foothold into life. At the Jewish Hospital I lay in bed after everyone had left and I called to God and said, “Please, please, give me another chance, God, to prove myself.” In that dark room there appeared before me a vision of God and He said to me, “Take the hand of My Son, Jesus, and walk with Him and He will show you the way to a new life, to a new joy, to a new happi- ness; the greatest of which you’ve never seen.” Now, I, being of another faith, was astounded by all this. Where my religion preaches to me that Jesus was not our Lord, but there I heard the words, “Come unto me, for I will show you the way.” Those were the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. It was here that the song “My Lord Saved Me”* came to me. When I tell you, fellow Christians, that this was the greatest joy of knowing that someone cares for you, it is like you have to walk alone, with no one around you, and you come to a dark street and it is a frightening-looking street, but you know you mqst go down the street because it is bhe only way to go. You start walking down this street and you shiver, you are frightened, you are scared. You don’t know whether to go forward because you feel some- thing is going to happen to you; yet, you can’t turn back because there is no turning back. Then suddenly you take a step and you think you are going to lose your balance, but some- thing holds you up and you feel someone takes you by the hand and leads you down this street. As that person takes your hand, you see a glorious light to brighten your way; lights of colors which you’ve never seen, beautiful and indescribable. Now your are not afraid anymore, now you are not frightened, nor are you scared. Suddenly, there is a big change all through your entire body. You feel relieved, but you don’t know what you are relieved of. I will tell you. You are relieved of your sin and, believe me, being in show busi- ness and working in cafes and be- fore audiences who drink, smoke, and dance to the music of Satan, this relief is indescribable. When you have found Christ and when He comes into your body, to your soul, to your mind, you are relieved of all this heavy burden that you have had with you all your life. You cannot fool Christ and you cannot fool your- self. For once you have taken Christ into your body and your soul, you no longer have the right to sin, be- cause you are being led by Christ. A person said to me, “Well, I can go to Heaven without Christ.” I tell you you can’t go to Heaven without Christ. There are no entrances to the walls of jasper except by Christ. There’s no way that man can go to Heaven, into the Kingdom of God, without going through Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth and the life. He is the only way. Jesus said, “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7.) Many denominations preach there are other ways, but you will only witness the truth, the joy in the sal- vation which I have found when you are born again. Children and grown- ups, rich or poor, must find this great product and accept it for them- selves. There is no price to pay; you must have a need for this prod- uct. When you have a need for Jesus Christ, then—and only then—will you be sa^ed. I believe that my com- ing to the Lockland Baptist Church and to Rev. Rawlings was of God and He has shown the way to me. Pastor Rawlings has taught me the things which are above board, which are profitable and which I_ need. There is no uncertainty when I hear him preach that our Lord Jesus Christ gave His life on the Cross so that all men 'could live if they ac- cepted Him as Saviour. I have always wondered what this meant, but now since I’ve taken Christ, I know what these words mean. To those who have found Christ, He is testing every day to see whether or not you are living up to your pledge. He is trying very hard to work His way into your life and once you have taken Christ, you have completely rebelled against Satan and all the things that he stands for. But Satan is always look- ing for an opening; therefore, we. Christians must practice every min- ute of our lives the pledges which we have taken. "My Testimony To God”, is my personal pledge to our Lord Jesus. It came to me after I was saved and I realized what a great obligation I now had. “That Blessed Night” com- memorates that same night with the joy and blessing I felt. I only hope and pray that some of my feelings may reach you who hear this album for it was made as a labour of love. I should like to express my deep- est gratitude to Ralph Kratzer, who played the Lowrey organ so beauti- fully for this album.
