RECORD GRADING
Here are the standard grades for record albums, from best to worst.
MINT (M)
Absolutely perfect in every way. Rarely seen. Only used when more than one person agrees the record or sleeve truly meets this standard.
NEAR MINT (NM or M minus)
Looks like it just came from a retail store and was opened for the first time. Nearly perfect. No visible defects, no writing or stickers, no spindle marks, no major factory flaws. Plays with no surface noise. Covers have no creases, ring wear or splits. These standards apply to all eras equally.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG plus) or EXCELLENT (E)
“Except for a couple minor things, this would be Near Mint.” Light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect play. Slight warps that do not affect sound are acceptable. Minor handling marks OK. Very light ring wear or discoloration may appear. Covers may have minor seam wear or a very small split.
VERY GOOD (VG)
More obvious flaws than VG plus. Loss of gloss, visible groove wear, scratches you can feel. Surface noise when played, especially in quiet passages, but music remains dominant. Often great value for listeners.
