Sonic Youth - Superstar / Redd Kross - Yesterday Once More
AA side in tribute to The Carpenters.
The real gem here is Sonic Youth's cover of "Superstar". A beautiful slow fuzz-rock homage to the Carpenters. It manages to be both faithful and subversive at the same time. Probably Thurston's best vocal performance; you can really sense him feeling his way through the lyrics.
A strange period in alternative rock history as the more intelligent members of US hardcore / noise / grunge scene, grappled with developing their sound, major label deals and their trajectory. Part of the process was a re-evaluation of their relationship to classic pop culture and a desire to look beneath surface aesthetics and probe for shadows and demons in seemingly unlikely places. While some bands saw this as an opportunity for throwaway irony, Sonic Youth's cover is a fascinating artefact of that process and remains a high point in 90s intertextual collisions and an interesting detour within the bands oeuvre. It's the reason you'll buy the record. The other side by Redd Kross lacks the same awareness and depth.
Limited edition, see through red-vinyl, plays perfectly, sleeve in excellent condition.
