Label & Vinyl Characteristics

• Side Two label: Blue-tinted photograph of a child (original uncensored image by Richard Avedon).
• Vinyl: Standard black wax, not translucent or colored.
• Speed: 33 ⅓ RPM
• S-17808 / S-17809: Rainbo Records pressing number.
• △16539 / △16539-X: Rainbo triangle identifiers.
• MASTERDISK DMM HW: Mastered at Masterdisk using Direct Metal Mastering by Howie Weinberg (HW), a legendary engineer.
• 1-1: Indicates first lacquer cut on both sides — confirming this is a first pressing.
• Front cover: 4-panel collage with handwritten “SONIC YOUTH” and “SISTER LP” text.
• Back cover: More collage work, including:
• A nude child photograph in the lower right (removed in later reissues)
• Stylized “SISTER” text and “THE SONIC YOUTH”
• Use of altered found imagery in signature Sonic Youth style.
Important Note: The original Avedon photograph (used without permission) caused legal trouble, resulting in the image being censored or removed in all later pressings after 1988. That makes this copy more rare and collectible.
