Sonny Rollins Quartet
"Colossus"
Original thick vinyl deep groove pressing from 1950's on Prestige Records, catalog #7079, mono. Has "446 W. 50th St. NYC" address on label, and "RVG" hand etched in the dead wax. Made in USA.
The vinyl is near mint. No marks and hardly any noticeable surface noise and sounds awesome. No static, just a very occasional super light background tick way under the music. The cover has no ringwear on the front but has some light nicks in the paper as the lamination is gone. There is slightly heavier ringwear on the back paste-on with some light age spotting there as well. Light edge nicks and a half inch split by the bttom opening.

This LP finds Sonny Rollins entering his prime years and quickly developing into the most influential tenor saxophonist in jazz (at least until John Coltrane fully emerged). One of his greatest sessions, all five numbers are classics: "Moritat" (which would serve as the basis for "Mack the Knife"), "Strode Rode," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and, especially, the original versions of "Blue Seven" and "St. Thomas." With pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Max Roach giving him stimulating backup, Rollins is in brilliant form on this essential music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
