Description
This is a test pressing for the Soul Asylum 45 "Tied To The Tracks" and "Long Way Home". I found this odd 45 in a used record store in the mid 80's and was never sure exactly what it was, although I expected it was a test pressing. The titles are hand written on the label, and it looked like you could see ink from a previous label as well. The cover is larger than a normal 45 cover...around 8", and it looks to be made from a cover from the Soul Asylum LP, "Say What You Will". Recently, I wrote to Paul Stark at Twin Tone, the band's label at the time, described the record and asked what it was. Here is his response:
You're correct about the test pressing.... we would have had 4-8
copies, the band would have a few and we would have possibly mailed a
few out to key press/ reviewers/ radio types.... have no idea who made
the cover... as far as side A... when you press records, you have to
have a paper label on each side to squeeze the "puck" of vinyl into
the mold... the pressing plant, taking the cheapest way...uses
whatever they have left over from printing runs of other labels...as
the ink runs out ... they get a stack of reject labels...etc...

So, a true collectable. I do see some light scratches on the 45 (unable to feel them), but it looks great overall. Visually graded only and I am certainly not a professional record grader, FYI.
