Down On The Upside is Soundgarden’s fifth studio album and was originally released on May 21, 1996. It showcased the band’s less heavy, more experimental sound, and placed emphasis on vocals and melody over the heavy guitar riffs that were found on the band’s earlier albums.

Topping the New Zealand and Australian charts, it debuted at number two on the US’ Billboard 200, selling 200,000 copies in its opening week. The album includes the Grammy nominated single “Pretty Noose” as well as “Burden In My Hand”, “Blow Up The Outside World”, and “Ty Cobb”.

Down On The Upside would be Soundgarden’s final studio album for sixteen years with the band’s break-up in April 1997.
