Description
Speed Jefferies and His Night Owls was one of numerous names under which the State Street Ramblers recorded over the years. They were a series of rotating musicians from Chicago's South Side, led by pianist Jimmy Blythe who recorded under different names for different labels. The best I can find from research is this is the first record made under the Speed Jefferies name, recorded in March 1931 on the Superior label, number 2648, which was produced by Gennett Records in Richmond, Indiana, which was in turn owned by the Starr Piano Company. Side A is ‘Georgia Grind’ and side B is ‘Wild Man Stomp’. The record itself is in good condition with some light scuffs and some scratches as you would expect on records like this, with one deeper scratch on side B and a very short, deep scratch/chip on side A. The only other record under this name that I can find as having been offered on E-bay sold for $457.
